Rye United Win
East Preston 0-2 Rye U
Rye squared up to this one without Ellis (knock to knee) but Loft came back
into the side down the left flank.
In the first minute Sam Cole managed to get a wicked cross over after some
good build up play. Rye settled down very early and a movement involving 9
passes led to rye forcing a corner. The corner was swung in to the far post
where Loft and Cole both jumped to connect. It was Coles head that connected
to put Rye in front after 4 minutes.
It looked like Rye might get a hatfull and The theme continued with shots
from McArthur and A header from Clarke to set up Leach who forced the keeper
to save . EP replied with a very high shot over goal and then Gardner was
brought into action diving low to his right to conceded a corner.
After another shot from Clarke Rye won a corner when EP should have cleared
away. The kick ended up in L Woodleys path and he shot narrowly wide. Not
much more entertainment after the lively start but Clarke was winning every
header in the opponents half and Rye were in control so some degree.
Second half and both teams traded Fks which were dealt with accordingly Then
on 50 mins EP got away on the break and their no 9 turned and volleyed and
was unlucky not to score, his shot not finding the net. 8 mins later and Rye
were appealing for a goal when Leach struck after turning his man only to
see the ball hit the cross bar and bounce down into the goal, the assistant
waved play on. Gall subbed for Watson .
EP had FK 5 yds outside the area that Gardner gratefully caught, his throw
setting up another Rye attack this time Watson shot skimmed the bar from 30
yds out.
Rye doubled their lead when L Woodley who had been as slippery as an eel
squirmed between 2 defenders and was brought down in the area. McArthur
stepped up to convert but after the keeper saved Maccapoked the rebound
home.
EP a few minutes later had the ball in the net but the last touch was from a
player 1 yard in front of goal and flagged off side. At the other end Rye
should have got a third when Leach beat the last man and rounded the keeper
only to fire from wide into the side netting.
Clarke subbed for McCann on 80 mins and the apart from another 9 or 10 pass
move by Rye the action was all over. Woodley came off for L Ridgway.
A nearby resident lit a bonfire I presume in protest over the lack of
entertainment, however Rye came away with a clean sheet and another 3
points.
