Tuesday night saw several surprises. Firstly McArthur out again due to injury Secondly Rye scorers both being strikers and lastly Rye for once had the rub of the green.
Sidley set their stall out early as a header went over the bar in the 2nd minute. More of the same a few moments later even when Rye won a corner this was turned into a Sidley attack. The first real chance went to Rye when Leach did good work on the flank to win a corner from which Clarke hit into the side netting.
Tuppenney got an elbow in the face by accident and Sidley took advantage as Rye just ballooned the ball into the air, a Sidley shot went just wide. Sidley then squandered an excellent chance to cause damage when a curling free kick went straight out for a Goal kick. Rye’s first shot on target was on 30 minutes when Nessling was forced to save. Danny Woodley then curled a shot wide after a good run and bearing down on goal.
A few moments later Rye made Sidley give away a corner which Ellis floated in and was met by a Clarke head at the far post. Clarke somehow scoring as he was sandwiched between defender and keeper while appearing to be injured. Minutes later Ellis went on a run and got clean through with only the keeper to beat but he seemed to drag the ball in front while he ran behind, he got the ball but couldn’t hit the open goal and a defender came to scramble for a corner.
Sidley began to harrass the ref at every opportunity and they received two yellows. Sidley came close to equalising when gardener was forced to punch the rebound after being they hit back but was blocked by Irish. The first half ended with Leach hitting 2 good shots at the goal one from a long way out. Second half and Sidley were determined to narrow the scoreline. Gardener was again forced to save but spilled out for a corner which fortunately was wasted. However the Rye keeper called to save after Rye lost the ball in their own half.
Lofty also called into action to head away for a Sidley corner. Rye first effort on goal was a header by ginger on 59 mins. Ellis got a yellow for language to the linesman and Sidley received another 2 yellows. Irish was replaced by Radley who watched as a Sidley shot deflected over for a corner. On 62 mins it was this corner that would put Sidley level. Mcminigal hit a lovely corner met by Rose's head. Mcminigal then hit a shot wide which could of gave them the lead.
Garmo subbed for S Cole. R Martin received a yellow for a foul. Radley set the ball to D woodley on the wing who’s cross was adjudged to have swung over the line and out of play. This was to be his last action as he was replaced by L woodley. Rye then conceeded a free kick for a handball fortunately a yard outside the area.
Another yellow for Sidley. Luke hit a fierce shot that was deflected out by Spice who again won a ton of balls for Sidley at the back. On 45 mins Sidley rounded the Rye keeper and shooting from a tight angle hit the base of the post. Moments later Radley went on a McArthur style run and was tripped from behind by Spice. Leach claimed the ball and hit it into the net.
The ref blowing for time not even allowing the ball to return to centre. The ref may have blown but still Sidley were in trouble as Cody got a red card. To sum it up both teams could have won on the night and that proves good football exists in this area. For Sidley It was the cruelist way to lose a cup game and Rye went home smiling.
