Rustington Win
Rustington 3-1 Rye United
Ryes winning run was was brought to a sudden halt when Rustington
unexpectedly beat table topping Rye who played a very poor game.
It was Rustington who fired at goal first forcing Gardner to catch but Leach
replied with a low shot along the ground that was easily picked up.
On 9 mins it was Leach again who fired at goal but his shot after taming a
runaway ball went wide.
Rye gifted the home side a goal on 20 mins when Ramsay seemed to hesitate
leaving the stiker to finish with a well taken shot into the roof of the
net. One minute later and Gardner dropped the ball but fortunately there was
no Rustington striker near enough to profit.
Rustington who had nothing to play for other than pride had a good spell of
possesion and Ryes only reply was a S Cole header wide at the far post from
a corner.
Second half and it only took the home side 5 mins to cause real trouble when
they should have scored but the extra man wide dallied and didnt shoot.
Rye changed formation and started to look a little more threatening, they
had a good shout for handball when a defender shielded the ball back to
keeper a few yards away and the ball bounced up off his hand. The ref who
blew for every coming together of players waved play on.
Ryes next chance was a Clarke FK headed wide when only a few yards out with
the goal gaping.
Rustington doubled their lead when a mix up between Woodley and Ramsay at
the back allowing Rustington a clear shot at goal which was well taken on 77
mins.
A little later Ben Ridgway scored by volleying from close range from a
corner. At least he was more vocal and his introduction seemed to boost the
team. Rye then pushed forward for the vital goal and after a few wasted Rye
Fks, Rustington scored in the final minute when on a counterattack they
outnumbered the Rye defence.
All in all a poor show that Rustington actually wanted to win and they
worked tirelessly as they were the first to most balls in mid field.
