Rye United Win
Rye U 4-1 Steyning T
Rye's pitch looking in very good condition and the weather a lot brighter
than recent weeks just added to another brilliant day at the Salts. Steyning
2nd from bottom facing Rye who were looking to do another double this
season.
McArthur's shot from Leach's cross on 5 minutes was blocked only for Sam Cole
to deliver another lovely ball. So the scene was set Rye were going to make
amends for the defeat by Loxwood in the Div 2 Semi-Final on wednesday night.
Rye had an early corner and McArthurs shot was blocked at point blank range
by the keeper.
Ellis pumped an up and under into the box and put the cat amongst the
pidgeons ending in L Woodleys cross being met by Dom Clarkes header that in
turn had to be headed away to safety.

Rye opened their account on 20 mins when McArthurs cross field switch pass
set Ellis up on one of his famous runs. With players screaming for it in the
box he ran on through and fired it into the top right hand corner past the
keeper and into the net
It took only another minute for Rye to nearly add to their tally when
McArthurs shot form 30 yards was spilled by the keeper. Steyning at the
other end won a corner in their first real attack and it was dealt with by
Gardner. A few Fks were exchanged - although Steyning should have done
better when they headed wide from the last one.
Rye won a corner that bounced around off players heads like a pinball
machine ending in an overhead kick by Ramsey wide of the target.
In the next six minute period Rye fired in 3 goals.
The first a good strike by Marc Gall (below) on 40 mins from close range under the keeper,

second 2 mins later Ellis gathered in front of goal and had time to control and hit
to the keepers right and into the corner. Lastly a Dom Clarke flick back header
from B Ridgways long throw on 46 mins. The ref blew for half time.
Second half started with a D Clarke header striking the far post. Rye then
made a double substitution, R martin and Dom Cruttenden on for Radley and
McArthur. Back into the action and Ellis's cross again resulting in another
brilliant Clarke header but this time caught by the keeper.
Steyning replied in the 56 min when their no 8 hit a very fine shot from 35
yards at a guess and it dipped over Gardner into the back of the goal. Rye
nearly had the perfect reply when again the duo of Ellis and Clarke had an
effort cleared off the line.
On 71 mins Clarke managed to fire over the goal from close range but the ref
gave a corner. Leach then shinned wide from a L woodley cross. At the other
end Steyning rustled up a half chance but Rye were looking the stronger all
game and Cruttenden, Leach ,Ellis and Clarke were all interlinking well.
The game ended with a disallowed Danny Leach Goal for an offside 3 yards out.
Then Ben Ridgway shot from the edge of the area which thumped
against the cross bar making it shake for several seconds after.
A good performance by Rye against a team that has nothing to gain or lose as
they have been told they wont be relegated due to their good facilities. So
every one I'm sure went home happy.
