Rye United Win
Rye U 5 - 0 Lancing
Rye scored five at Lancing earlier in the season and Rye carried on the tradition.
Although it was Lancing that started the brightest albeit for the first 4 minutes, when they launched an attack from the Kick off followed by Rye conceding an unnecessary corner. Fortunately the set play was dealt with comfortably by Radley. Rye on about 8 mins settled down and Luke Woodley was already showing skills down the wing.
Ricky Martin had a shot after a Lancing air kick from Tuppenenys corner. Danny Leach later was allowed to run free down the left and cut inside to find Tuppeneny who shot over. Rye then penned in Lancing for a solid 5 minute bombardment resulting in Tuppeneny again firing at goal but so far all efforts were frustratingly off target. Gardner at the other end caught a cross comfortably on the edge of the area.
On 20 mins the best chance fell to Lancing when their no 9 brought the ball down across his body with his right foot and cut inside and shot with his left, the ball going wide across goal. Rye had 2 quick successive Fks the last one hit wide by Clarke from Ramsays cross. Rye had definitely picked up the pace and another shot from Luke Woodley followed by Sam Cole hitting from distance and then Ryes best chance so far was a Clarke header from a S Cole cross.
This forced a brilliant far post save from the keeper and away for a corner. The deadlock was finally broken on 43 mins when Luke Woodley chested Ramsays cross and fired a volley wide of the keeper. Half time whistle and Rye had something for all their efforts. Second half and Lancing had a rare FK near the half way line but it landed safely into Gardners arms. It was Luke Woodley who again caused damage down the wing and his cross come shot forced the keeper to spill across goal, Danny leach was at hand to fire in from close range on 55 mins. Rye looked more at ease and the goal attempts starting to escalate, Ramsay shooting wide.
Lofty pirouetted around several defenders and won a FK a yard from the area, which Tuppeneny swung in. This time Clarke headed narrowly wide but seconds later he headed over when a Rugby style up and under caused panic in the box. Luke Woodley brought a diving save out of the keeper but still the second goal eluded Rye. 70 mins had passed and Lancing had their first real venture into Rye territory but the shot went over after some good passing play.
Rye took off Watson and replaced him with Ellis who within seconds gathered the ball and ran basically from the half way line ducking and hurdling any challenges until he got 10 yards from goal and he struck home on 66 mins. Ellis then nearly set up Leach but his cross was just too strong into the box and the keeper scrambled to collect. Rye netted the fourth when Luke Woodley crossed and Clarke this time wasn't denied on 73mins. This was to be Clarkes last action as he was taken off and replaced by McCann.
These changes didnt affect Rye who still persisted in tearing Lancing apart. Leach had a volley blocked and Luke Woodley unlucky not to score again when he dropped his shoulder and curled a delicious ball that thumped the far post. Lancing then robbed Ellis and set off down field only to find Ellis snapping back and regaining possesion. Loft was replaced by Godden. McCann connected to a deflected cross and nearly scored in the 83rd minute.
Ellis still not satisfied was like a Jack russsell shaking a rabbitt and he was brought down after another mazy run 3 yards short of the area. The FK gave an opportunity to Leach who had another shot blocked from close range by the keeper. Ellis hadnt finished though and on 89 mins he did another war dance carrying the ball as he went in a loop wide in the box and back inside and shot past a flailing keeper for Ryes Fifth of the day.
The game ended with Gardner making a customary catch although this time he had to quickly adjust his feet. Rye were excellent value today especially second half when all guns were blazing, as a result Gardner was kept very quiet. Another clean sheet and some outstanding performances, Ellis and Woodley immediately spring to mind and also Clarke and Leach up front. Some nifty footwork by Loft.
All the substitutes made some impact on the game. A very solid performance where hardly a foot was put out of place.
