Westfield Win

Rye U 1 - 2 Westfield

Rye lacked sparkle in the last game v higher opposition but surely today
would be different. Unfortunately Westfield picked the right day to play at
the Salts as a poor Rye performance saw Westfield win without having to do
too much.

The first goal attempt was by McArthur whose tame FK went into kpr
Fosters hands, Gall fired wide and then Leach on 11 mins had a shot at goal
saved. Gall had another shot blocked near the line. Gardner helped a
Westfield corner past the goal for another corner but this was the only
action he saw until Woodleys curling strike rounded him on 30 mins aginst
the run of play.

The goal left an unpleasant taste as Westfield had had not
deserved it and the goal was provided by a misplaced pass by Ryes defence
under no pressure at the time. This coupled with the 2 very strong tackles
Woodley made at the start that received a stern talking to instead of the
usual red card. However Westfields ONLY shot of the whole half went in and
cancelled out Ryes dominance and passing play.

Rye then proceeded to waste opportunity after opportunity with Fks taken
short instead the more direct route or were tame and caught by the keeper.
Rye guilty of overplaying and wanting another touch compared to Westfields
just kick it up field meant the game was disjointed. The half ended with
McArthur shooting wide and Clarkes effort also heading wide.

Second half and it was more of the same except both teams raised their game.
It would have been harder for Westfield to play any worse with their solo
effort from the first half.

Rye saw B Ridgway head over , McArthurs cross headed by Clarke and a Leach
shot all in a few minutes without any success .

Westfield doubled their lead from a deadball when they won a corner from
Gardner having to tip a Baker shot onto the bar. The corner allowed to land
in the danger area and having several touches by both sides before ending up
in the net. Abdulahi replaced by L Woodley and S Cole for Godden. Westfield
made changes to shore up the defence as Gall and B Ridgway had efforts at
goal. Now the ref started to card pl;ayers a bit too late for me.

Rye managed to make Westfield crave the whistle when on 85 mins (and down to
10 men )Mcarthur shot from distance and Fosters save spilled out for Leach
to round and tap in. Godden received a second yellow near the end.

Rye got too frustrated and didnt stay focused finished up with 9 men and
still looked as effective, Westfield on the other hand, had only 1 or 2
plays of note in the whole game and conceded against 10 men,but the
entertainment value was very low. Attendance 170
