Rye United Win

Rye U 3-0 Wealden

Rye managed to claim first place in the league after disposing of Wealden and maintaining their terrific run in the league. Some Wealden players didnt arrive until after the 7.30 k.o. and as result played with 10 men until the 20th minute.

Rye didnt take advantage of the situation and it was Wealden who on 8 mins flashed a header wide, followed by a blast over from the edge of the area with the goal gaping wide.

Ryes first effort was a McArthur shot from distance going wide, moments later he was brought down and stamped on ,but the ref calmed the situation and no further confrontation emerged.

Still with 10 men Wealden were not sitting back and Rye were guilty of some lose passing in what was turning out to be a scrappy first half.

Wealden managed to counter attack on the break but their shot was denied by Jon Gardner in the Rye goal.

At the other end a Ridgeway throw was headed by Clarke and touched by Leach towards goal. The keeper couldn't gather first time and McArthur was inches away from making a connection a few feet from the line. McArthur unleashed a chip from just inside the opponents half that caught the keeper scrambling to cover but it just wide.

Wealden forced Gardner to push a goal bound effort to one side, and a little later he was able to catch an overhit Wealden FK.

Rye looked likely to score when Leach ran onto a through ball from midfield but his shot on the turn was stopped by the keeper. It was Clarke though who had the best chance so far when he rose highest to head a McArthur FK but Clarkes radar was off target and his header drifted wide.

Rye eventually got on the score sheet on 45 mins when McArthur won a FK outside the area and after taking it , the ref pointed to the spot seeing the ball strike a hand in the wall. So Rye went in at half time 1 – 0 up.

Second half Rye were determined to show a better display and in the 2nd minute Leach had unleashed a powerful shot. Rye had a lot of possesion without the final killer ball but Rye won another McArthur FK that once again did not clear the wall. A moment later and Clarke's header landed near Ramsey whos overhead effort went over the bar.

Rye doubled their lead when in the 61st minute from another McArthur FK converted at the far post by Clarkes header. 65 mins and Ellis was replaced by Tuppeney and shortly after Gall replaced by Watson and Leach by L Woodley.

Wealden should have done better when they collected the ball on the halfway line and rounded 2 defenders only to let fly wide from close range with 10 minutes to go.

The game was already settled when L Woodley ran onto McArthurs half way line flick and it looked like he might head for the corner flag, but instead he arrowed towards goal and shot home from a narrow angle on the right side.

Another clean sheet and Rye showing that they could turn things around in the second half.
